What I would like to ask: how does someone escape long-term abuse?

This question is on behalf of a woman and friend I know who has been abused and manipulated horribly by her husband for over 10 years. She got married under false pretenses, and feels guilty for believing his lies and "ruining her life" by marrying him and quiting her path in life (college) to help achieve his dreams. The thing is, she has been weakened very much, and after losing her dad and having bad relationships now with the rest of her family, is afraid of leaving because she thinks, sometimes, that she "has no one else" except for her abusive husband. Her spirit has been crushed by her husband for a long time - how can she escape from the abuse, conquer her fears, and gain enough strength to face the challenge of leaving? Thank you.

If she wishes to escape, she will because she has access to phones, internet, email, and/or emergency resources these days. She must, deep down, have the courage and wish to leave her abusive husband. Ultimately, it is her decision.
